The Hidden Cost of "Available: 0" at the Wrong Location

Stock stranded at the wrong location

Here's a scenario that trips up more Shopify stores than you'd expect: a product shows plenty of stock available, orders still come in fine, and yet somehow that stock never actually ships.

Often the answer isn't a bug. It's that the stock is sitting at a location Shopify has marked inactive.

How this actually happens

Multi-location Shopify stores end up with old warehouses, closed pop-up shops, or a location a staff member deactivated months ago and forgot about. Shopify doesn't delete the inventory attached to that location. It just stops treating it as a place orders can be fulfilled from.

So you get a variant that looks perfectly healthy on the surface. Available quantity is positive. Nothing looks broken. But every single unit of it is stuck at a location nothing can actually pull from.

Why this specific pattern is worth flagging

This is one of the more direct things Ghost Stock checks for, deliberately, because it's something we can say with real confidence rather than guess at. If a variant's available stock sits entirely at inactive locations, with zero at any active one, that's not a maybe. It's verifiably true right now.

We're careful about this, actually. A product simply selling out isn't treated as suspicious on its own. Being below some arbitrary "expected" number isn't either. This particular check only fires on the one thing we can prove: the stock genuinely can't be fulfilled from anywhere active.

What we don't claim

We won't tell you this is definitely a mistake, sometimes a business genuinely does want stock parked somewhere non-sellable for a reason. What we will tell you is that it's worth a look, and give you a way to check it (see our piece on Start Count for how that works in practice).

The fix, once you spot it

  • Reactivate the location, if the stock is actually sellable from there.
  • Transfer the stock to a location that's active, if it isn't.
  • Run a physical count, if you're not sure the number is even right in the first place.

None of those are things Ghost Stock can decide for you. But knowing which SKUs to even look at is most of the battle.
